The End of the Semester

Wow!!! I can't believe that I am going to become a junior after two months. Frankly speaking, I dicover that the pace of life in college seems to be much faster than senior high school. Probably because I am always a busy person in college. Therefore, every time when summer vacation is coming, I am always happy because the two-month vacation is always useful for me to relax and plan some trips. What 's more, I also can use this opportunity to think about my future life in college because I really want to have an unforgetable memory of my college life.

I really want to appreciate all the teachers who have worked so hard in this semester. Thank you for teaching me lots of useful knowledge and help me with my assignments and my daily life. I really think that most teachers in English Department are all very kind and attentive to the students in this department. Finally, I also want thank the professor who have taught me English composition for the whole year. Thank you for all you did. I will keep pursuing my dream and I hope what I have learned in college will become my power and nutrition to acheive my goal.

Should Homosexual Parents Adopt Children?(revised)

Homosexual issues are often controversial in today’s society. More and more minorities demand equality in society, homosexual people also follow the trend and fight for their right. However, from a sociological perspective, there are many studies that support the idea of denouncing the legality of homosexuals. In many countries, it is still illegal for homosexuals to get married and adopt children. In my opinion, homosexuals should not adopt children.

First of all, children raised by gays or lesbians will easily confuse their sexual identity. For instance, in the article “The Sneaky Debate over Legalizing Adoption by Gay Couples,” William Saletan raises the issues such as ”Sexual identity confusion is common among children raised by gay parents,” and ”Children of lesbians are less likely to fit traditional gender roles.” Moreover, in the news, “New Jersey Court Decision on Gay Parents Adopting Children,” many people also appose the law on gay parents adopting children because they think a child has a better chance of developing a healthy sexual and emotional identity if raised by heterosexual parents. These evidences all point out the fact that children raised by homosexuals will be incapable of distinguishing their sexual orientation and the proper behaviors of a specific gender.

Second, children in homosexual families are difficult to build friendship with other people. As a matter of fact, because of widespread homophobia, many people still cannot accept homosexuals. Therefore, if children who are raised by homosexuals, they will easily be discriminated and insulted by other people. What’s worse, because people are not willing to befriend with children raised by homosexuals, these children may easily lose themselves and go astray. For example, the author of “ New Jersey Court Decision on Gay Parents Adopting Children” points out that “Common sense and an overwhelming body of social science data suggest that children raised outside of one-mother, one-father families are more likely to experience problems like drug abuse, depression, poor discipline, and confused sexual identity.”

Third, it is difficult for homosexuals to play the role of parents capably. Evidence in the article “ The Sneaky Debate over Legalizing Adoption by Gay Couples” reveals that “There is an increased incidence of suicide, depression, multiple sexual partners and domestic violence in homosexuals compared to the heterosexual population.” As a result, being adopted by homosexuals definitely put children in an awkward situation because there are too many uncertain factors, which may lead to unpredictable consequences. On the other hand, homosexual parents seem to be much harder to maintain stable relationship and furthermore, they may have problems in behaving properly as a mother and a father. Like William Saletan states in his article, “The Sneaky Debate over Legalizing Adoption by Gay Couples,” “It is hard for a gay couple to sustain the stable relationship,” and,” Children do best when raised by a mother and a father.” Because the same-sex parents may be unable to provide the love and care of the gender opposite to them, their children will lack complete love of both a father and a mother, and this situation will impact their personality development negatively.

However, some people believe that homosexuals can also be capable parents and they won’t give bad influence on children. Diana Hechavarria says in her article, “Family Matters: Gay and Lesbian Adoption,” that “We need to accept homosexuals are capable parents, and they do not produce dysfunctional behaviors in children, nor detrimentally affect their well being.” Controversially, this statement cannot prove the feasibility of homosexual parents adopting children because there indeed are a lot of problems in most homosexual families such as children’s sexual identities, lacking parental love, and inability of building friendship. Therefore, this is why most people disagree with homosexuals adopting children. For instance, like what I have mentioned above, “Common sense and an overwhelming body of social science data suggest that children raised outside of one-mother, one-father families are more likely to experience problems like drug abuse, depression, poor discipline, and confused sexual identity.” These evidences all hold the negative perspectives towards the adopting issue of homosexuals.

To sum up, I agree with most people’s points of view that it is not suitable and capable for homosexual parents to adopt children. What I have discovered about this issue is mostly negative opinions, which mean that the feasibility of homosexual parents adopting children should really be questioned and reconsidered.

The Drama Night

Today, I went to see a drama performance held by our department. Frankly speaking, last year , I also went to see the drama performance but the play didn't touch me at the end. However, the plot this time was so interesting that I really expected to watch the play at first glance. After watching the performance, I thought all the actors and actresses did an exellent job and the show really made me laugh and I really enjoyed it.

The show began with a strange family. Why I call it a strange family was that all the members in the family was so crazy that they all had some freaky personalities. What made me feel most impressed was the father of the family because he always stayed in his labotory and created lots of different bombs. However, the most important concept of this play was to give people the idea of self determination of life. People cannot determine the life style of other people and that why the play was named " You can't take it with you." Therefore, both the leading characters finally realized that they shouldn't break up because of their family. Even though they borned in families of different living standards, they still could get married only if they were confident of their decisions and tried their best to convince their families.

True Love Kiss

Last night I went to see a movie, "True Love Kiss." The movie is talking about a rich family which was cursed by a witch because the witch's daughter commit suiside because of this rich family. Every one just laugh at him. Then, he decide to give up the marrige and find another noble woman to marry her. The maid is so sad that she jumps down the hill and dies. Therefore, her mother curse the family that the first daughter of next generation in this family will have a pig face. Only when a noble man who wants to marry her and kiss her and then the curse will be destroyed.

Therefore, The pig face girl has a terrible childhood because her mother never let her out in order to protect her. What' s more, her mother keeps looking for a noble man who is willing to marry her, but no one does. However, in the end of the story, the girl break the curse by herself because she herself is also a noble person and finally she accepts her own appearance and go out to enjoy her life. She is not afraid and she makes a lots of friends. She has the courage to accept herself and the curse breaks up by itself. Moreover, She also finds her true love. The movie give me the strength to believe in myself and I have more courage to defeat the difficulty in my life.

P.S. I Love You

This is one of the greatest movies that I have ever seen. In the beginning, I think it may be a movie of tragedy, but at the end of the movie, it shows an end with a powerful ending which describes the main character in this movie, Holly, finally finds out her own way to overcome the sorrow and re-face her life. This movie is mainly talking about a woman, Holly, whose husband died not long after they get married. Therefore, Holly beomes a widow, and she still cannot forget the happy time she and her husband spent before. It seems that her husband is still alive and stay by her side. She becomes confused about her life and always blames God of why he took her husband away. She just stay at home and does nothing. What's worse, she cannot overcome the misfortune she has met.

However, at this time, she begins to receive the letters from her husband. Her husband had written a lot of letters before he died and he asked one person to help him send the letters one by one to his wife. All he wrote in the letters are the beautiful memory between them but most important of all, he wants to help his wife to overcome her sorrow and forget him to start a new relationship with other man. The letters are not just about the happy time they spent but the eagerness of her husband who really wants to help his wife to get over from the bad time and restart her new life and new carrer. Finally, she find out her way and realize that her husband never comes back, so she cherishes what she already has and pursues her dream. I really get a lot of feedbacks from the movie and I do know what I want in my future.

A Happy Week

This week is the happiest week after the mid-term examination. First of all, I an going to participate in the singing competition which is held by our department. Therefore, I am now writing this journal nervously because the competition starts tonight. Even though I have practiced the song many times, I am still afraid that I may make some mistakes at the competition. I think I really should give myself more confidence and not to care too much about the prizes. Wish me good luck, and I will do my best on the stage tonight.

Second, I am going to have a big dinner with my college family members. This meal is very meaningful to my family members because the eldest member in my family is going to graduate in June. We probably may not see him again. Therefore, I really hope all of my college family members can build an unforgetable memory after separating apart. However, even if I am extremely looking forward to the family reunion this Friday night, I am still a little bit worried because I am afraid that my senior doesn't like the gift we bought for him. I hope he will love his graduating present.

Homosexual issues are always controversial in society nowadays. As more and more minorities ask for liberty and equality in society, homosexual people also follow the trend and fight for their right. However, from a sociological perspective, the widespread homophobia is the leading cause of denouncing the legality of homosexuals. In many countries, it is still illegal for homosexuals to get married and adopt children. In my personal opinion, homosexuals should not adopt children.

First of all, children raised by gays or lesbians will easily confuse their sexual identity. Third, it is difficult for homosexuals to fit the position of parents capably. Evidence shows in the article, The Sneaky Debate over Legalizing Adoption by Gay Couples, that “There is an increased incidence of suicide, depression, multiple sexual partners and domestic violence in homosexuals compared to the heterosexual population.” As a result, being adopted by homosexuals definitely put children in an awkward situation because there are too many uncertain factors which may lead to unpredictable consequences. Anther statement from Diana’s article,” Research supports that there is no apparent difference in the mental health of children raised by homosexuals,” can also be overthrown. Actually, only a few cases of homosexuals adopting children are positive, but it does not mean these few cases are successful. Even though there is no “apparent difference” in the mental health of children raised by homosexuals within these few cases, there will definitely be some subtle difference and malfunction in the mental health of these children.

To sum up, I agree with most people’s points of view that it is not suitable and capable for homosexual parents to adopt children. What I have discovered about this issue is mostly negative opinions which mean that the feasibility of homosexual parents adopting children should really be questioned and reconsidered.

A lucky week

This week is really lucky to me because I received the news that I had already passed the GEPT high-intermediate level. I remember that I was extremely anxious at Monday night because the result of GEPT test would be announced on the internet on Tuesday. I was so nervous that I could't fall asleep that night. When I got up on Tuesday morning, the first thing I did is to check my grades of GEPT test online. When I knew that I passed the test, I was extremely excited and happy because all my efforts had been paid off.

Second, I have applied for several scholarship this semester. To my surprise, I have already got three of them. This really makes me feel very happy because I can store all the scholarship in the bank as the fund of my trip to America. Because my parents cannot support me to go to America, I earn the money on my own. I have some part-time job and I use these money to pay for the rent of my house and also the daily expense of myself. The rest of the money will be stored in my own account. Now with the scholarship I received this semester, I already have enough money to go abroad. Next summer vacation I will probably go to America. I am so excited and I really want to appreciate all the organizations that provide me with such great help.

The Cutting Edge 2

After the mid-turm exam, I finally can relax myself. Therefore, I had watched a great movie this week. The name of the movie is The Cutting Edge 2. The first reason of why I think it is a great movie is because that both male and female characters are very charming, and the second reason is that I am extremely interested in the plot of the movie.

The content of the movie is mainly talking about a proud young girl who is good at skating. What's more, both her parents are all excellent skaters. However, during one of her skating competition, she fell down and broke her legs. After three months recovery, she finally came back to the stage of skating, but her ability and skill of skating had already declined. Therefore, she needed to find another partner to practice pair skating which emphasized not on the personal skill but on the harmony of the two skaters. Although finally she found a partner, both of them still had to overcome lots of problems. Moreover, the girl finally found out that she had already fallen in love with her partner. However, because of her pride and stubbornness, she had no courage to admit her love to him. To my surprise, the most interesting thing happened when they were going to have their final competition..... If you want to know the answer, just go and borrow this movie to find out the answer by yourself.

Trip in Taipei

Remember that I had told you last time that I was going to Taipei zoo during Spring vacation, now I really want to share my experience in the zoo with you. At first, my friends and I were worried about the heavy rain in Taipei; however, fortunately, there was only a little rain during our trip in the zoo. To my surprised, it only cost 30 dollars each to enter the zoo for students. What made me impressed was the monkeys in the zoo because some of them would talk to us. Although they were speaking alien language, we still enjoyed talking and having some interaction with them such as waving our hands or giving them some flowers. As for my friends, he was busy taking pictures for his report all day. In addtion, the penguins there were also the hot scenic spot in the zoo. To tell the truth, it was a little cool in the penguin accommodation but the peguins were really...cute. I love them so much.

After the zoo, we went to night market to have dinner. We had our dinner in a fancy restaurant which served Indian meals. Even if it was an expensive restaurant, we still enjoyed the meals there because the meals were super dilicious and fresh. That was the first time I ate in the indian food restaurant and I would definitely have the second try. After dinner we went shopping together; actually, all of us wanted to buy some new clothes because summer is coming, and we all had great desire to have the latest summer clothing. Therefore, we spent a lot of money in Taipei and we didn't feel guilty because we seldom had the chance to go out together because all of us were really busy. It's time to relax ourselves and enjoy the happy time.

The Spring Vacation is Coming

How wonderful the vacation is !!! I have been waiting for the vacation since the beginning of this semester. What's more, my friends and I have been planning for the vacation since last week. Finally, we have decided to go to the zoo in Taipei this Wednesday. After visiting the zoo, we will go to the night market to buy some clothing. To tell the true, there is a long time that I don't go shopping with my friends. Therefore, I will seize the opportunity to buy me a nice jacket.

The reason why we want to visit the zoo is that one of my friends has to do some research on a specific animal. When he suggested that we go to the zoo during spring vacation, all of us were stunned because he was the one who totally hated animals. To my surprise, everyone agreed with him after he explained the reason to us; however, we wanted to go to Southern Taiwan at the beginning. Therefore, I could not help but follow their decision. After all, I really had a great desire to visit some places in Southern Taiwan, for I seldom had the chance to go to southern areas. Whatever, I still expect our trip to the zoo. It 's true that I haven't been to the zoo for a long time. I remember clearly that I always went to the zoo with my family in my childhood. I think it's also a good thing that I can brush up the experience of visiting the zoo when I was a little boy. In short, I can't wait for the spring vacation because I miss all my best friends so much.

The New President

I am so happy that the candidate I support won the election, even though I didn't go home to vote for him. In fact, I usually won't express my happiness in front of others because I am afraid that other people may against my joy for he or she support the opposition party. In my opinion, the political issues are always hypersensitive and controversial in Taiwan. Therefore, I won't state clearly to others which side I take. I don't want to evoke quarrel and argument. However, here I really want to give high praise on the speech of the opposite party's candidate.

The opposite candidate delivered a speech when he knew that he lost the president election. He did not blame anyone; instead, he blamed himself. He told people who supported him that it was his fault to lose the election and moreover, he urged people to support Taiwan because his own failure was not the collapse of Taiwan. All people should gather together to bring our country to prosperity. In his speech, he showed everyone his magnanimity and the spirit of democracy; as a result, I really admire and respect what he had done.

“Less” Speaks Louder Than “More”

In David Daniels’ article, “College Lectures: Is Anybody Listening?” clearly points out the inadequacy of present education system that “teachers, it is charged, are not doing a good job of teaching, and students are not doing a good job of learning.” In addition, he criticizes drastically on the lecture system, “an arrangement much loved by faculty and administrators but scarcely designed to benefit the students.” Moreover, the author considers smaller classes are more effective than lecture courses. In my point of view, smaller classes indeed are more preferable than lecture courses.

First of all, lecture courses do make students feel sleepy easily during the class, but smaller classes do not. For instance, when I attended the lecture courses of liberal education in my freshman year, I can barely concentrate on the lecture because the two- hour long lecture really exhausted my energy. Furthermore, some instructors even talk nonsense in class and students can hardly catch the main points of the lectures. However, I feel quite interested and enthusiastic when taking smaller classes, such as English listening, English composition, or English speaking for there is no distance between professors and me; therefore, I can hear clearly what they say and make responses.

Second, lecture courses cause more students’ absence than smaller classes. Through my observation, lecture courses usually bore students with invariable teaching pattern. As a result, students become passive to attend the dull lecture courses because they think they are wasting time in class. On the contrary, students turn out to be much active and aggressive when taking smaller classes in which they can involved themselves in discussion with their group members and the professor. The interaction among people in smaller classes makes students have great desire to participate in every class and its activities.

Third, lecture courses create a sense of laziness for not only professors but also students; nevertheless, smaller classes help them to build a sense of responsibility. In my own experience, I had once taken a history class taught by an awful professor. He never called the roll in class and he did not care whether everyone attended the class or not. What’s worse, he just kept reading the textbook by himself and never explained the meaning of the content. After a period of time, only four or five students would attend his class punctually; the rest of the students would only appeared in class during midterm or final examination. On the other hand, because students are required to discuss the specific issue together and take the responsibility for doing the research on their own, they will understand their presence is absolutely important for group members and the professor. Meanwhile, the professor has to figure out the appropriate program and schedule for students to execute their arrangement and help the students evaluate their works. Through this kind of pattern in smaller classes, it benefits both professors and students; moreover, they all acquire what they should learn in class.

To sum up, I really encourage the faculties and administrators in schools to devote themselves to the execution of teaching and learning in smaller classes. Even though it is hard to achieve, just like Daniels says in his article, “ Lectures will never entirely disappear from the university scene,” we still have to try our best to popularize and spread the idea of learning in smaller classes. After all, through this way, both professors and students can get the utmost advantage.

Foreign Language Camp Celebration

Last night, we held our camp celebration in a fantastic cafeteria of a high class hotel. It was used to celebrate our hard working during the camp in winter vacation. To tell the truth, we really did a great job this time and the activities of the camp were all very successful. Therefore, the institution of our department decided to give the students who were involved in this camp a big reward. That's why we could have such a big dinner last night.

I really enjoyed myself las night because there were a lot of delicious food. The steak there was my favorite dish.Others such as, cake , salad, Chinese food, or fried shrimp were all very fantastic. I totally fell into the thriving atmosphere and we did live the party up last night. For me , I always cherish the wonderful time in my life and I will keep it deep into my heart. I hope that I won't be so busy that I can still participate the foreign language camp next year because I love to work together with other people.

The volley ball competition is coming on the weekends

I am so excited this week because the volley ball competition of all foreign language departments in Taiwan is coming up soon. Why I am extremely happy is because that I have been dreaming for attending the competition for a long time. When I was a freshman, we did not have enough people to form a volley ball team. Therefore, we could not participate in any competition because we were running out of teammates. However, as a sophomore, I can finally fulfill my dream because we have some freshmen who join our volley ball team. Now, I am looking forward to the competition this weekend.

To tell the truth, we had a lot of people at first, but in the end, we only have six people in our team. Therefore, we all have to attend the competition because a team needs at least 6 people to play the game. It's a pity that many of our teammates left because they said that they did not have passion in volley ball anymore. Therefore, our team becomes even weaker than before because some talented teammates had left. Even though we are not strong enough, we still want to join the competition because all of us want to acquire the experience of playing the game and witness the advanced skills of other volley ball teams.

The cruelty of the world war II

This Wednesday night, I had seen a movie which described German twin sisters who were seperated because of the death of their parents and both of them lived different lives since then. The older sister, living in a poor farm with their uncle in Germany became a child labor and sometimes was even abused by their uncle. On the contrary, her younger sister, living with their rich relatives in Holland received good education and enjoyed a high living standard. They were forced not to see each other until they grew up in their twienties. Although they finally saw each other, something just happened in their relationship which later became a boundary between them.

Then I realized it's the boundary of culture differences and racial discrimination. When they saw each other, they saw the differences between them. For instance, when Lisa, the younger sister gave the photo of her Jewish fiance to Rotter, her older sister, she was stunned for a moment because of his race. At that time, German Nazi slaughtered Jewish people. In addition, German people were full of superiority among all the races. Moreover when German army attacked Holland without notice, Lisa's fiance was captured by German army and was taken to a concentration camp. After a period of time, Lisa recieved the news of his death caused by the toxic gas experiment. On the other side, Rotter's husband died because of the war, too. Both of them fell into deep grief, especially Lisa, who at the same time was a German, too. She struggled not only with her morality but also with the blood inheritance from her German father. These horrible issues are all aroused by the war; therefore, war brings no good for human. After seeing the movie, I witness the great tragedy which comes during the war and I am so glad that I do not experience the war time.

The Beginning of second semester

After a short winter vacation, the new semester has begun. Frankly speaking, I rarely stay at home during the whole vacation becouse I have part time jobs in Taichung. I am not only a tutor of four high school students but an asistant of an English cram school. Therefore, I only spent my vacation at my hometown for one week which was also the week of Chinese New Year. After that, I came back to Taichung and was ready to welcome the new semester.

It was a pressure that I had to start my jobs when I returned to Taichung at the very beginning. At that time, I was wondering that maybe I can continue resting for another week; however, my dream fell apart. Moreover, I also had to deal with a lot of stuffs in order to get ready for the classes. Fortunately, all my favorite classes had been registered by myself and I had to take 25 credits just like the last semester. My friends think I am crazy and they don't understand why I like to torture myself. I think maybe I am definitely a workholic and I just can't stop. Actually, I don't really care about others because I know this is the best choice. Maybe when I am in the third year of university, I can take some classes in other department.

Finally, I really wish I can fulfill my dreams in this semester. I have so many things that I want to do; however, time seems to be never enough for me. Whatever, I will try my best to achieve my goals in this semester. Wish me good luck!!

Happy New Year

This Monday was the last day of 2007, and everyone went to different places to celebrate this day. As myself, I went to see the movie with my friends at night. Actually, first we planned to go to Taipei 101 to enjoy the live concert and watch the fantastic fireworks. However, we didn't make it because most of us had part-time job at night. Therefore we decided to go to the movies after work. Maybe next year, we will go to Taipei to enjoy ourselves.

We went to the theater at 10 o' clock but the movie was at 12 o' clock. Therefore, we went to eat McDonald's first. We chatted with each other and talked about the unforgettable memory in the whole year. Later on, we watched the movie together. After the movie, we went to the park to see the beautiful stars and set off the firework. We really enjoyed the happy moments that we had spent.

This semester is going to the end. I really learn a lot of things this semester. Therefore, I have a very good time on both the activities that I have participated and the courses that I have taken. Thank you very much for teaching me so many things. I really appreciate for the whole thing that you have done for me. Wish you a happy new year and a wonderful winter vacation.
